A pair of Christmas commissions

Her Protectors

This Little Light of Mine II
9" x 12"
Oil with palette knives on board

Bill saw a painting I did called This Little Light Of Mine and it inspired him to commission two new paintings from me. They would become Christmas gifts to 2 friends that just welcomed baby girls in to their families. It's a little hint of what is to come when they get a little older.

A street with a view

Provincetown Overlook

18" x 24"

Oil with palette knives on board

SOLD

On one of our drives home from Provincetown, I made Polo pull the car over on Bradford Street so I could capture this scene. I loved how you could see the ocean from this view in addition to the interesting rooftops of the houses on Lovetts Court and the greenery and treetops that surround them.

Christmas commissions: 2 new entering signs

Entering Harwichport
16" x 16"

Entering Provincetown
16" x 16"
oil with palette knives on board

Peter saw the sign painting I had hanging at the Red Inn in Provincetown and asked if I would paint one of Harwichport where he has a home. It would be a gift for his wife for the holidays. Then he asked if I would paint another one of Provincetown for his son's home as well.

He asked for the sides to be painted as well. But instead of just painting them a flat color, I continued the image around the sides instead. Like this:

He told me they were a big hit at Christmastime. Always good to hear.

Curious Seal II

 Curious Seal II

12" x 12"

Acrylic pour (background) Oil with palette knives (seal)

SOLD

Thomas saw my painting Curious Seal that is hanging at Cafe Heaven in Provincetown and he said it always makes him smile whenever.  He asked me if I would paint another one for him.

I used a different technique for this painting. Instead of using palette knives for the water background, I used a technique of pouring acrylic paints (about 5-6 colors) and just let it do its thing...swirling left to right to create the feeling of the water. Then I finished it off by painting the seal's face with my usual palette knife technique.

I let the acrylic colors drip off the sides which you can see here in these side photos.

Here is a link to the first painting I did which shows a little more of the process. https://anngorbett.blogspot.com/2022/02/larger-seal-paint-pour.html

New size for Entering Provincetown

Entering Provincetown

10" x 10"

oil with palette knives on board

SOLD

As with the paintings of the Red Inn, I have painted this sign many, many times over. But this was a new size for me, the smallest I've done. It was a little tricky to paint the letters as this small size, but I managed and Kirsten was very happy with the result.

I should probably start keeping track of how many of these I have done. I think I might be around 12-15? I'll have to go back through my blog and count. Although I'm not sure I posted every single one.

Happy New Year!

Perfect Snow Day

14" x 11"

Oil with palette knives on board

Bill saw the painting I had done of the girl carrying the lantern (This Little Light of Mine posted here) and it gave him an idea. His friends just had a baby boy so he asked if I could paint a scene with a boy pulling a sled as a gift for them. As he says, showing them "what is to come".

Today here in New England we are having a perfect snow day too. The kind where the snow sticks to the trees branches and the light shining thought the trees is so beautiful. It's our first snow of the season so it's nice that it's so pretty.

Red Inn number 41/58

The Red Inn in Summer

6" x 12"

Oil with palette knives on board

SOLD

Toni saw a red inn commission that I posted to Wescover and asked if I would paint a smaller version to give to her wife as a gift. They both love the red inn in Provincetown and wanted to have a special painting to remind them of their favorite memories there.

Although I've painted this inn 41 times (58 versions total in and around the inn), this was a new size for me. A small more intimate size but I was still able to get a lot of detail.

Come Read With Me

Come Read With Me

14" x 11"

Oil with palette knives on board

Next up in my series of girl paintings, is this little girl reading. There was something about her pose, sitting in the chair that looked so natural to me. We've probably all sat in a chair like that when we were kids. Or maybe even as adults. The stuffed animal friend tucked behind her was also captivating to me. So sweet.

Christmas is coming!

Make a Wish
9" x 12"
oil with palette knives on board

It's that time of year again. The magic of Christmas is just around the corner. But first, let's enjoy the wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving to be with family and loved ones and simply enjoy a good meal and be thankful for what we have.

I loved this image because I knew it would be a challenge to paint the glow on the little girls face as well as capturing the candlelight while still getting detail in the darks.

Learning To Fish
14" x 11"

SOLD

Next up in my series I call "Las Ninas" is this young girl learning how to fish. I loved the light depicted in this image as it makes both her and the rocks glow. I bet she catches something soon.

Peak contemplation

Dream Like A Girl

I found the image I used as my inspiration for this painting on Unsplash.com. It's a great resource for artists since the images can be used copyright free. I loved this girls pose, outfit, not to mention the gorgeous background. I knew it would be a perfect choice to utilize my palette knife techniques.

Shelby 2

Shelby at the Beach
9" x 12"
Oil with palette knives on board

I've painted this cute pup before, but in her honor, there was a request to paint her again. She deserves to be captured in this moment of happiness with her tongue and tail wagging playing in the waves with her tennis ball.

Historic (perhaps haunted?) homes in Newport, RI

Cross Street Colonials
6" x 6"
oil with palette knives on board
SOLD

Happy Halloween!
I spotted this trio of homes while walking around historic Newport RI. This is the corner of Cross Street and Elm Street. The colors, shadows, details as well as the clouds captured my attention. It was fun to paint this scene at such a wee size. I was still able to get enough detail in the architecture to capture that historic feel. Imagine all of the souls who have lived in these homes over the years!!

View From the Provincetown Inn

Looking East (from the Provincetown Inn)
12" x 24"
oil with palette knives on board
SOLD

Last April when we made the trip up to Provincetown to drop artwork off at the Red Inn, we stayed overnight at the historic Provincetown Inn. What an incredible view you get from the very end of Commercial Street. We also happened to have gorgeous weather so of course I got inspired to paint a scene from their beach. You can also see both the Red Inn and the Pilgrim monument from here which is so cool.

Whenever we visit Newport RI, this row of buildings on Bellevue Ave always capture my attention. Maybe because yellow and red is one of my favorite color combinations. Wouldn't you love to live in this wee house?

New Entering Sign

Entering Eastham
16" x 16"
Oil with palette knives on board
SOLD
I am working my way through all of the towns on Cape Cod. Of the 15 towns, I have painted these signs for about half of them. Phew. This painting was sold to a lovely family who is lucky enough to have a home in Eastham. The Coast Guard Station at Coast Guard Beach on the National Seashore is what is pictured in the background.

Bill asked me to paint this portrait for his friend who lost his beloved companion Shelby earlier this summer. Love her sweet face.

Are you ready for winter?

Snowy Owl
6" x 6"
oil with palette knives on board
SOLD

I painted this on a very hot day back in September. I think it reached 96 degrees that day. So painting this scene was quite opposite of what was going on outside. I just loved this owl's eyes and his spotted feathers. He just looks so regal sitting on this blanket of snow.

If you are a birder, you've probably tried to capture photos of this illusive bird. They make their nests on some of the beaches here in Massachusetts and it's quite a scene when one is spotted.
