David asked if I would paint this cute portrait of their family dog Ella who they recently had to say good bye too. She looks so cute sitting in the boat on the shores of their home town in Chatham on Cape Cod.

I painted this scene twice before at a smaller size (6x6) and wanted to try it in this larger format. This is a very famous street in Boston's historic Beacon Hill area, photographed more than any other street because of its quaint cobblestone street, historic brick homes, and inviting doorsteps. It immediately takes you back in time to the days of Paul Revere and Samuel Adams.

This was another Boston scene that I had painted smaller before (5x7) and decided to try it slightly larger. This doorstep caught my eye with it's plentiful flowerpots and plants, creating a garden amongst the cement and bricks.

I've been working on building my inventory of Boston based paintings and was looking through some images I had taken around town when I worked on Berkeley Street. Newbury Street in Boston is a great place to stroll, shop, and dine while visiting the city and was not far from our office so I would spend many lunch hours there taking in the interesting architecture and people watching.

I painted this scene previously at a smaller size (6x12) but decided I wanted to try it larger. Frani saw this painted posted on Facebook and told me that she and her friend had fond memories of the Custom House and Boston so she decided to purchase it for her home.
Here are a couple of pics she sent me once she found the perfect spot to hang it.

I think I've painted this scene about 5 or 6 times. It is always a popular view of the Boston skyline as seen from the harbor walk in the Seaport District.
Today, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of our country, many tall ships will parade through this waterway and will be quite the spectacle to watch.

Brian saw the painting of the Entering Lexington I had for sale at Galaray House and asked if I would paint one for him with the Arlington sign. He wanted to include some iconic Arlington spots in the background so I included (from left to right) the Uncle Sam Monument, the Minuteman Bike Trail, a painted horse, and the Cyrus Dallin museum.
As a special touch, he wanted to add himself walking his two dogs into the scene. That's them at the bottom right.

I was looking through my references for something to paint on a small board I had and came across this image of hydrangeas. While I was painting it, I kept thinking how this large blooms resembled a fireworks display on the Fourth of July.

It only took me 12 years to figure out that I could combine my two most popular paintings-Entering Provincetown and The Red Inn. The light bulb went off and here is the result. This painting is now on display at the red inn for the summer season and we'll be heading up there soon to see if someone decided to bring it home with them.

Jacqui saw this painting I posted on Facebook when I was asking for help coming up with a title for it. She suggested My Blue Heaven because it reminded her of one of her favorite places near where she grew up on Long Island. The inspiration was actually Wellfleet on Cape Cod, but since Jacqui decided to purchase the painting, it's her blue heaven now!

I was looking for inspiration for my upcoming series of paintings to take up to the red inn this year and I saw the photo that inspired this painting on the Facebook page called Cape Cod Photography. I asked the photographer, Jeff Krehely, if he would give me permission to paint it. I was fortunate that he said yes!
Chuck saw the painting I posted on Instagram and told me that the house with the porch swing is where he spent his wedding week in Provincetown. Chuck decided to purchase it as an anniversary gift for his husband.
I just love when my art can make a meaningful connection like that with someone!

I can't believe that I have now painted this beautiful place 70 times. This painting was inspired by a photo taken by Marshal Walden at Curbin' Art. I love how the red brick path leads you right to the door, or to the Adirondack chairs on the deck. Either way, you are in for a treat!

Another painting inspired by an image taken by Marshal Walden at Curbin' Art. The sky that he captured in the photo was amazing and I tried to capture it as best I could in paint.
I love Memorial Day weekend-the official kick off to the summer!

Another nocturne inspired by an image taken by Marshal Walden at Curbin' Art. This was a challenge to get all of the rooftop to read as only being lit by the beautiful sky and a few street lights. But mixing the colors with subtle blues and purple tones was fun.

Next up in my series of Provincetown paintings inspired by Marshal Walden's photos is this one, a nocturne. Nocturnes can be difficult to paint. The lighting is completely different than natural light but I was so taken by his photo, I had to give it a try.
The title of the painting is also inspired by what he wrote about the photo…”There’s a moment, once the evening deepens, when the moon slips quietly into view and the world exhales. Silver and blue light dance over the harbor. It’s in this stillness and unspoken calm period that I feel a hidden poetry of the night.”

This is the first in a series of Provincetown painting inspired by the photographs of Marshal Walden (Curbin' Art on Instagram and Facebook). Marshal's photos are so carefully and creatively composed that I rarely have to crop or alter them in any way. I am so fortunate that he gave me permission to paint from whatever image I want from his collection.
More to come!

There’s a fun “small world” story behind this painting from Pat, a former coworker, who purchased the first one I painted: “We hosted a party at our house last weekend here in Maine. After folks had been here for an hour or so, one of the guests pulled me aside and said, “Tell me about the little painting in the kitchen.” Before I launched into the whole story, I asked her why she wanted to know about that particular painting. To my surprise, she said, “I used to work in that building when I was employed by AARP.” I didn’t even know that AARP was in One Beacon, but she recognized it immediately and wanted to know why I had a picture of it. I explained our connection through HMCO, and long story short, she loves your work and might also be interested in a One Beacon painting. I told her I’d reach out to you and put you in touch.”
I love making connections like this with my art!

Molly and Ray at the Galaray House saw a painting I had on my website of a brownstone on Beacon Hill (which had sold several years ago) and asked if I would recreate it for their gallery. It was fun to revisit this unique vertical format.

Great news! A few months ago, I was invited to be included in a new gallery in Lexington, Massachusetts called Galaray House. Ray and Molly were so nice to invite me to show my work at their beautiful espresso bar/art gallery. I created this piece on spec and just learned that it is now sold!
Galaray House is moving to downtown Boston which will be an exciting new venture for my work. Stay tuned!

Dean is a grandpa! He is so over the moon that we wanted me to paint not just one portrait of his new grandson Calder, but two so he could keep one for himself and give the other to the new parents.

Happy Groundhogs Day! This is the 69th painting I've done of the Red Inn in Provincetown and it is my largest one yet.
Ben and Gordon were staying at the inn last year and saw a painting of mine hanging on the wall in their room. They told me they asked around to find out who painted it, and finally tracked me down.
I usually paint on board but that would have made this a very heavy painting due to its size, so we decided to go with canvas instead. I haven't posted progress shots in awhile but I remembered to take some as I was working on this painting:

My sister Cathy's best friend Chris contacted me and said she had an idea for a painting that she wanted me to create as a gift for my sister. For the past several years, my sister has been working on a really special project called The Box 29 Diaries Project. It was inspired by our family's happenstantial discovery of a diary my mom had written for a history class she was taking at Miami University in the 50's. Turns out there are several hundred of these diaries in existence in the archives of the university, and the project was created to make the families aware of the existence of these diaries written by their loved ones. Cathy has interviewed several of these families and so this painting represents my sister talking to one of the family members about the diary. As a fun twist, Chris and I set it in a bar scene named after the archive box number in which my mother's diary is located.
Today is my mother's birthday. I think she would be very proud of my sister's efforts to contact the families and create awareness about the existence of these diaries and their place in history.

I have been so busy with commissions and then the holidays hit that I am only now getting back to updating my blog with my most recent paintings from the last few months.
Teddy asked if I would paint a portrait for his friends who recently tied the knot. It was fun to paint the beautiful dress and veil with my knives as well as the rock wall and background scenery.
Congratulations to the Hoglunds!
